puberty happens
Whether you want them to or not, your child is growing up and their body is changing. It is important to make sure they are prepared and understand the changes that are going on in their bodies.
In the middle of the school year, the 5th grade girls are taken by Jessie Byram (Farquarson)- Guidance and Jessica Ganchi- Nurse and the boys are taken by Nick Ford- PE teacher and Chris Beyer- teacher, to review some basic education on puberty. They are shown a video and have time to ask questions. You, the parent, will receive a notice home in your child's school folder alerting you of when this lesson is going to occur. It is typically done on the Friday right before February break.
Here at WHS, we use a portion of the Always Changing® Program that helps both boys and girls:
• Understand the physical and emotional changes they experience during puberty, and acknowledge these changes as a normal part of growth and development.
• Learn the physiology of their bodies and correct terminology for parts of the reproductive system.
• Understand that personal hygiene is each individual’s responsibility.
In addition, the program helps girls:
• Understand the menstrual cycle.
• Understand what to expect during a period.
• Learn how to manage periods while continuing with normal activities and while at school.
See below to view the Puberty Videos that are shown for 5th grade puberty education. The boys view the "boys" video and the girls view the "girls" video. They are about 20 minutes in length.
